During 2004 the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland assessed individual cardiothoracic consultant surgeons' performance in an effort to provide more transparent and patient-centred healthcare. In the past crude mortality rates have been used to assess performance. However, in the future these figures will be risk-adjusted. This involves the use of statistical analysis (eg logistic regression), which takes into account different risk factors among the individual patients being compared.
