Using textual and critical discourse analysis this article examines the complexities of racism and racial stereotyping within murder inquiries where the perpetrator of the violence was from a black minority ethnic background. Nine inquiry reports are examined and the issues highlighted show how certain stereotypes and misconceived notions about black people’s lived experiences are incorporated into professional practice, such as risk assessment and management, care planning and therapeutic interventions. The article examines both the process of carrying out murder inquiries and the care and treatment given to patients with mental health problems.
