CHRONIC PYELONEPHRITIS AS A CAUSE OF END STAGE RENAL DISEASE

Of 161 patients with end stage renal disease 42 had chronic pyelonephritis. In addition to a history of urinary tract infection these 42 patients had complicating defects, most often vesicoureteral reflux. With respect to severe renal damage the term complicated pyelonephritis is suggested instead of chronic pyelonephritis. Complicated refers to vesicoureteral reflux (66.7 per cent), analgesic abuse (14.3 per cent), nephrolithiasis (11.9 per cent) and obstruction (7.2 per cent) as the most common diseases in addition to urinary tract infections.
