Pain experienced during the labour and birth process is a combination of multiple physiological and psychological factors (). Many women choose to use pharmacological methods of pain relief, with epidural anaesthesia being evidenced as one of the most effective pain relief options for labour and birth (). However, epidurals are also associated with widely reported adverse effects: for example, a higher incidence of medical intervention (including assisted birth using forceps or ventouse), neurological effects and post-dural headache. Many women report dissatisfaction with their birth experience due to this form of analgesia ().
