Twenty years ago, the first Safe Motherhood conference took place in Nairobi, Kenya, and the global Safe Motherhood Initiative was launched in order to tackle ‘the most striking inequity in public health: half a million women, 99% of them in the developing world, … dying every year in pregnancy and child-birth’ (Starrs 2007). Celia Pett, an independent midwife and freelance writer, reports from the follow-up conference held in London in October 2007.
