Abstract
A high proportion of patients require cannulation for vascular access. Peripheral intravenous cannulas are most often used, which can cause complications and fail before treatment is completed. Other devices are available, and a framework was developed to help health professionals to choose, insert and assess the most appropriate for each patient. As research continues, the framework is being revised to reflect the latest recommendations. This is the first article in a two-part series, which outlines a framework designed to aid assessment, decision making and management of devices for individual patients. Part 2 explains the procedure for inserting a peripheral intravenous cannula.
