Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormonal disturbance that results in a collection of symptoms and has wideranging health implications. There is evidence that it may run in families, and it is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes and recurrent miscarriage. Diagnosis involves eliminating other potential conditions, while treatment aims to manage individual symptoms rather than provide a cure.
