Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 2003, Vol 48(2), 252–255. Reviews the book “The Disorders: Specialty Articles From the Encyclopedia of Mental Health” edited by Howard S. Friedman (2001). The purpose of this book is not to polish up the authentic clinician or to ingrain a scientific perspective toward psychopathology in total, but rather to encourage that the reader to adopt a scientist-practitioner attitude when applying or critiquing his or her trade. The reviewer concludes that this text is neither practical enough nor scientific enough for clinical use. It is neither a collection of treatment manuals nor new JAMA data. Psychotherapy researchers and sophisticated providers will be similarly disappointed as far as their own areas. With few exceptions (e.g., Escobar and Gara outline a novel and intriguing approach without leaving the data), this is a just-right volume.
